Learn Python in 10 Minutes: A Gentle First Program

You do not need to understand all of programming before writing your first useful script. You need a small problem and a few building blocks.

Start with a variable:Copy

name = input("What is your name? ")
print(f"Hello, {name}!")

The variable stores a value. input() gets text from the user. print() displays a result. Add a condition to make the program respond differently, then use a loop to repeat a question or process a list. Finally, put a repeated action into a function so the code has a clear name.

The most important beginner habit is reading errors slowly. Python tells you the line where it became confused and usually gives a useful description. Fix one error, run the program again, and avoid changing five things at once.

A ten-minute introduction cannot teach the whole language, but it can remove the mystery. Programming is a process of breaking a goal into instructions, checking the result, and improving the instructions when reality differs from the plan.
